Sadaqatul Fitr, also known as Fitrana or Zakat ul-Fitr, is a charitable contribution of food that holds profound significance before the Eid prayer, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. This act of giving is a testament to the love of Allah and is obligatory for every self-supporting adult Muslim who possesses surplus food beyond personal requirements, catering to both themselves and their dependents.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) emphasized Zakat ul-Fitr to cleanse the fasting person from indecent words or actions and to ensure provision for the needy. It is considered Zakat when given before the Eid prayer, signifying purification and charity. However, if given after the prayer, it serves as a form of Sadaqah, a voluntary act of kindness. Your contribution to Zakat ul-Fitr can make a meaningful impact, providing sustenance and support for those in need during the blessed occasion of Eid. Join us in this essential initiative to empower communities and embody the spirit of compassion and giving.
“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat ul Fitr [Fitrana] to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.” [Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ZAKAT AND ZAKAT-UL-FITR
The first difference lies in eligibility. Zakat-ul-Fitr is compulsory on all Muslims regardless of age or financial standing. The only exemption is for those who do not have one sa’ (approximately 2.6 – 3kg) of their staple food in excess of their needs. Because of the wider range of people who have to pay Zakat-ul-Fitr, it is the responsibility of the head of the household to pay for those under their care.
Thus, for children, this task is undertaken by their parents on their behalf. Zakat, on the other hand, compulsory for only for Muslims who meet the Nisaab values after all their yearly Zakatable earnings are calculated.
